A nameplate is read before it is admired. Someone works the letters out across a table or at a school gate, and only then notices the chain. That is why the cut of the script decides more here than the weight of the plating does: a tail that curls too far turns an m into an rn, and a name with two capitals in the middle loses one of them at fourteen millimetres. Our plates are cut from a single sheet rather than strung together as separate letters, which is what keeps a nine-letter name from sagging in the middle by the second month.

Length is the thing to settle before the metal. The plate stands ten millimetres tall whatever is cut into it and takes up to fifteen characters, so a long name grows sideways rather than downward: a nine-letter plate is a wide pendant, and on a small frame it hangs better from the eighteen or twenty inch chain than from the fourteen.
