The picture is the whole purchase, and it is worth being blunt about what happens to it. A photograph that fills a phone screen is about to be printed two and a half feet wide or more. Anything soft in the original gets softer; a dark room stays dark; a face at the back of a group photograph becomes a smudge you cannot explain away. What works is a picture taken close, in daylight, with the faces large in the frame: and for a collage, ten pictures that all pass that test rather than eight good ones and two that were the only ones anybody had.

After the picture, the size. Thirty by forty inches is a pram, a car seat and a lap. Forty by fifty is a child on a sofa. Fifty by sixty covers one adult with their feet under it, which is what most people actually want. Sixty by eighty goes over a double bed, and it is the one people wish they had ordered when the smaller one arrives. The cloth is flannel fleece: warm, light, and it lifts a little in the first wash, which is normal. Wash it cold, tumble it low, and keep it away from a hot iron: printing and heat do not get on.
