Flannel and fleece throws printed with a name in a repeating script, with one photograph across the whole cloth, or with a collage of up to ten. Four sizes: 30 by 40 inches for a pram or a lap, 36 by 36 square, 40 by 50 for a child, 50 by 60 for a sofa and 60 by 80 for a bed.

Pick the size by where it will actually be used, because the difference between them is larger than it sounds. Thirty by forty is a lap and a car seat; fifty by sixty covers one adult on a sofa with their feet under it; sixty by eighty goes over a double bed and is the one people are disappointed by when they order the smaller one for it. The printing is on one face, so the back is plain fleece; that is the side that gets slept on. A photograph blanket is only as good as the photograph: a picture that looks sharp on a phone is being blown up to two and a half feet wide, and a dark or blurred original stays dark and blurred. Wash cold and tumble low, and expect the pile to lift a little in the first wash. One thing this shelf will not tell you: a blanket with a baby's name on it is a present for a pram, a play mat or a lap, not bedding for a cot. The paediatric guidance is plain that for the first year nothing goes into the crib but a fitted sheet, and it is linked at the foot of this shelf.
