Two sizes and two jobs. The 36-inch square is a floor blanket: it spreads flat on a rug, folds into a pram, and is the one that ends up in the boot of a car for two years. The 30 by 40 rectangle is a carrying blanket: over a shoulder, over a car seat, over a lap during a feed. Both are flannel on the printed face with a satin trim along one edge, and the trim is the part a small hand finds and keeps hold of.
The thing this page will not do is pretend a blanket belongs in a cot. The American Academy of Pediatrics is explicit: for the first year a baby sleeps on a firm flat surface with a fitted sheet, and blankets, pillows, toys and bumpers do not go in with them.
